Dar Williams, Haley Bonar, and Stephen Kellogg And The Sixers at Minnesota Zoo

Dar Williams is a favorite among the adult-alternative set, and with good reason: She’s a winningly literate singer-songwriter with undeniable gifts as a storyteller. (In fact, she's also a novelist, with two books under her belt including 2006's Lights, Camera, Amalee.) She’s also gotten a bit livelier in her later years: 2005’s My Better Self got a little more bouncy, focusing as much on catchy melodies as clever narratives. Last year's Promised Land moves comfortably between coffeehouse folk and rock-pop, suffused throughout with Williams' socially conscious lyrics, and features guestwork from Suzanne Vega, Marshall Crenshaw, and the Jayhawks' Gary Louris. Opener Haley Bonar moved from St. Paul to Portland recently to finish work on her fourth album, the follow-up to the sad, sweet, and often mesmerizing Big Star; here's hoping it's a temporary move.
