David Sedaris at State Theatre
Stories of dysfunctional families are entertainment’s bread and butter, from film to TV sitcoms, but essayist and author David Sedaris has managed to etch out a whole new facet of the genre over the years. Sedaris has inspired a fervent legion of fans that lap up stories of his rocky childhood and adolescence in North Carolina, starting with the adored 1992 collection of essays The Santaland Diaries, which followed his experiences as a department-store elf. Sedaris’ most recent collection of autobiographical essays, 2008’s When You Are Engulfed In Flames, ranges in degrees of quirky banality—from how to make coffee when the water is shut off to the benefit of blocking windows with LP covers to protect against insane songbirds—but, true to form, is delivered with characteristic wit and humor.
