The Dodos and The Ruby Suns at Turf Club
Meric Long and Logan Kroeber—the men behind The Dodos—write arty folk tunes that eschew easy virtuosity and excessive influence-dropping in favor of clear, compelling storytelling and skewed style. Their third album, Time To Die, was produced by Phil Ek (the indie guru behind The Shins’ Chutes Too Narrow, among others) and it kicks up the San Francisco-based band’s sonics considerably. Subtle orchestral flourishes sprint around Long’s reverb-soaked voice, and all the harmonies sound bigger and brawnier. The Dodos don’t play with their formula more than they need to, however, and the result is an album that’s at once accessible and ripe for exploration.
