Dredg and Rx Bandits at Station 4
Dredg is a California group that dabbled in nü-metal before reconfiguring itself as a neo-prog band spiked with eerie, foreign-language vocals and atmospheric piano interludes. Its new The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion is perhaps its most overblown to date: 18 tracks encompassing everything from children’s choirs to chugga-chugga metal riffs to lyrics inspired by Salman Rushdie poems. California punk band Rx Bandits started out during the third big ska revival, circa 1995, and quickly evolved beyond any easy tagging. The group is known for ferocious live shows and an ever-expansive sound. The latter figures into Mandala, a 2009 album put out by the label Sargent House, home as well to The Mars Volta's Omar Rodriguez-Lopez.
