A Fine Frenzy, Landon Pigg, and Among The Oak And Ash at Fine Line Music Cafe

When Alison Sudol debuted as A Fine Frenzy with 2007’s One Cell In The Sea, she came across as just another ivory-tickling ingénue in the Tori Amos/Sarah McLachlan tradition, with pretty, pensive songs suited for soundtracks and late-night reflection, but hardly ready for the big rooms she was thrust into. The title of her new Bomb In The Birdcage announces her intentions to shake things up a little, offsetting her former whispery ballads (like breakout hit “Almost Lover”) with faster, livelier tunes that should keep audiences from wandering off to the bar. With an emphasis on heavier percussion, shoegaze guitar textures, and electro-pop coquettishness, Sudol trades somnolence for sass, which should help distinguish her from the pack.
