When the term “new age” is mentioned, George Winston is the artist that comes to mind for most people—whether they realize it or not. Though the Santa Cruz resident has made records that pay tribute to both The Doors and Peanuts composer Vince Guaraldi, Winston’s gentle, ambient piano pieces are the mainstay of his career. They might be difficult to hum in the shower, but they’re equally difficult to dislike: Albums like Autumn, Summer, and Forest have sold millions of copies and provided the soundtrack to thousands of study sessions and candlelight dinners.
