Grand Old Day at Dixie's
The annual Grand Avenue fest aims to be everything to everyone, combining the bounce houses of a family-friendly block party, the handcrafted goods of an art fair, and a hazy, alcohol-fueled day of live music. Folks 21 and up who buy a wristband will gain access to “festival gardens” where they can watch sets from locals like Heiruspecs, Jeremy Messersmith, and Red Pens. Don’t forget the almost-locals: The Detroit-based Von Bondies feature Ouija Radio’s Christy Hunt on guitar, and three-fifths of Philadelphia’s Free Energy used to be in St. Paul band Hockey Night. They now play fun, if a bit dopey, power-pop songs, which go well with crowded parking lots, sunshine, and deep-fried snacks.
