Grant Hart and Phil Solem at Station 4
Former drummer and co-leader of iconic punk trio Hüsker Dü Grant Hart—he wrote favorites like “The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill” and “Diane”—pretty much vanished after a series of ’90s albums, solo and with Nova Mob, that never got the attention they deserved. (Barring a couple of unheralded singles, he spent the 2000s concentrating on visual art instead.) Though he certainly took his sweet time, Hart's 2009 solo disc, Hot Wax, is a confident return. Backed by members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Hart kicks out a set of organ-driven rock showcasing his thoughtful, thematically ambitious lyrics, ranging from Buddhism to Greek mythology to mischievous imaginary friends. He's joined at this New Year's Eve show by Phil Solem; the veteran songwriter is best known as half of The Rembrandts (the guys who did the Friends theme song), and released his first solo album in 2008.
