Hank III And Assjack and Those Poor Bastards at First Avenue

Hank Williams III plays a bizarro hybrid of country, metal, and rockabilly, which he refers to as “100 Percent Pure Hellbilly.” Thanks to battles with his label and Walmart, it took a while for Williams to deliver 2006’s Straight To Hell, so he made up for lost time by churning out last year’s Damn Right, Rebel Proud. Like most of Williams’ discs, it’s a schizoid mix of his grandpa’s dusky honky-tonk and formulaic hardcore shout-outs about getting ripped up and fixin’ to wrassle—or as “P.F.F.” puts it, “punch, fight, and fuck.” Williams is joined here by his punk-metal band Assjack—which put out a self-titled debut this year—and Madison’s Those Poor Bastards, whose morbid “gothic country” continues its own march toward damnation on last year’s Satan Is Watching.
