The Heavenly States, Themes, Ice Palace, and Lower 48 at Turf Club

The Heavenly States have gained recognition for where they’ve been—tours include Egypt and Libya—but it’s perplexing that the California group hasn’t made waves for its gloriously catchy indie rock. Propelled by Genevieve Gagon’s violin and Ted Nesseth’s contagious energy, the band writes smart, inspired, and often beautiful songs that ring with the hand-clapping, upbeat frivolity of The New Pornographers. (Twin Citians may remember Nesseth for Fluke Starbucker, the early-2000s band he fronted while he lived here.) The Heavenly States planned to release a digital-only EP called Delayer, but it grew into a self-prophetic full-length released last year. They're currently working on their fourth album.
