Hoots And Hellmouth, William Elliott Whitmore, and The Western Fifth at 7th Street Entry
Philadelphia roots-rockers Hoots And Hellmouth belt out their blend of Americana as if from a rickety wooden stage at a sweaty Louisiana summer-night revival. Their approach to bluegrass-tinged folk-pop is easygoing and charming, though it stays pretty safely within the established boundaries of the genre, with about a 50/50 blend of alt-country and jam-tinged roots. Their 2007 self-titled debut married an acoustic stomp, pared-back classic American styles, and a freewheelin’ gospel choir. The new The Holy Open Secret takes the trio farther down the same familiar road, but it’s still a fun trip.
