The Horrors, Crocodiles, and Ouija Radio at Turf Club

On paper, The Horrors sound like any of many like-minded British bands. Garage-rock guitars? Check. Shoegaze atmosphere? Check. All-black attire? Check. But the Southend quintet stands out from the pack with surprisingly polished indie rock. Its debut album, Strange House, pushed the band into instant fame with the breakout success of “Sheena Is A Parasite,” an apt study of punk’s demise. A front-cover shout-out on the UK’s go-to music rag, NME, soon followed, as well as a much-anticipated appearance on the upcoming Gorillaz album. By the time follow-up Primary Colours came out this year, The Horrors had already made a commercial name for themselves, but the explosive sophomore effort also achieved critical acclaim with a prestigious Mercury Prize nod.
