The Intelligence, Birthday Suits, and The Blind Shake at Turf Club
The static-laced, proto-industrial clamor created by Seattle post-punk band The Intelligence bears a striking resemblance to that of the A Frames—no surprise, then, that it’s led by A Frames drummer Lars Finberg, who also handles deadpan vocals, ham-fisted keyboards, and assorted electronic clutter here. On record, the band is known for dousing its no-wave-ish dance-punk in an acid bath of lo-fi noise, grinding out surprisingly refined rhythms and pure dissonance in equal measure—this year's Fake Surfers is something like '60s Britpop as interpreted by aliens from Saturn. Live, that means you better bring your earplugs.
