Jeremy Messersmith, KaiserCartel, and Zoo Animal at 7th Street Entry
Jeremy Messersmith burst onto the Twin Cities scene in 2006 with The Alcatraz Kid, a home-recorded batch of melodic melancholia that had critics falling over themselves to compare his folk-pop mini-symphonies with angel-voiced and emotionally troubled pop icons like Brian Wilson and Elliott Smith. Semisonic’s Dan Wilson produced 2008's follow-up The Silver City, which added extra polish to his downhearted, sweetly sung tunes. Expect new material here, as Messermsith's been recording new songs for his third album. Brooklyn’s Courtney Kaiser and Benjamin Cartel play friendly folk-pop that keeps the emphasis on sweet, not saccharine; Kaiser’s melodious voice in particular is worth the price of admission. The former elementary-school teachers play unassuming but lovely songs that show the influence of their old careers, accented with acoustic guitar, toy xylophones, and breezy vocal harmonies.
