The Jerk at Uptown Theatre
The proverbial rags-to-riches-to-rags story has been told many times, but never as comically as it was in 1979’s Steve Martin-penned, Carl Reiner-directed The Jerk. Martin stars as Navin Johnson, an outrageously stupid, rhythm-challenged white boy who grows to adulthood amid a family of poor black sharecroppers. After learning (to his shock) that he was adopted, Johnson sets out for the big city, which both rewards him with true love and kicks him with karmic comeuppance—but the plot is secondary to the film’s endless hilarious non sequiturs.
