Joel And Ethan Coen: Raising Cain: No Country For Old Men at Walker Art Center

With the Oscar-winning No Country For Old Men, the Coen brothers made a triumphant return to the noir genre, but it was a different kind of noir from Blood Simple and The Man Who Wasn’t There. No Country is an arid, Southwestern noir, one in which all the moisture has been sucked out of the air along with most of the big emotional displays that usually mark Oscar contenders. The Coens’ adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel is indisputably quirky in a way that recalls their comedies, but the humor is all buried under somber tension that keeps the action grim and utterly shocking. It’s rare to see a thriller this perfectly paced, perfectly performed, and perfectly unusual—its Best Picture win was well deserved.
