Since getting his start with the progressive protest hip-hop of The Beatnigs and The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy, Michael Franti has moved on to a more accessible blend of rock, reggae, hip-hop, soul, jam, and politics with his current band, Spearhead. Franti has also dabbled in filmmaking with the eye-opening documentary film I Know I’m Not Alone, wherein the musician traveled to the Middle East to talk to American soldiers and Iraqi citizens, as well as Israelis and Palestinians, and ended up forging connections and common ground through music. Of course, Franti realizes that songs alone won’t bring peace, even if they’re as engaging and smart as those on last year’s All Rebel Rockers.
