Johnny Cash: Live At San Quentin at The Trylon
It wasn't Johnny Cash's first time performing behind bars—he'd famously played at Folsom Prison in 1968—but the Man In Black's show the following year at California's San Quentin Prison was definitively iconic. (Not least because it was there that the infamous photo of Cash flipping off a photographer was taken.) The subsequent live album was a crossover hit for Cash, netting him his first No. 1 album on the pop charts, and no wonder—the crackling sense of energy between Cash and his audience is palpable, inspiring him to give one of his most magnetic performances. The concert was also filmed for Britain's Granada Television, and later turned into a documentary by filmmaker Michael Darlow, which screens here.
