Laura Veirs at Cedar Cultural Center
Songwriter Laura Veirs specializes in haunting, understated folk-pop with layers of acoustic guitar melodies and moody texture from an organ, drums, and subdued electronics. At least that was her reputation before 2007’s Saltbreakers kicked up her energy level with synthesized beats and washes of keyboards. Saltbreakers proved more forceful than Veirs’ eerier early work, but after parting ways with the musicians that helped her make it (save for producer Tucker Martine), her 2010 record, July Flame, returns the Oregon native's voice and guitar to the forefront. Martine fills in spaces with atmospheric production suited for the record's seasonal title, along with guest work by My Morning Jacket's Jim James and The Decemberists' Chris Funk. Veirs is touring behind her newest LP, Tumble Bee, a 2011 collection of folk songs written for children.
