Lesley Gore at Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant
Lesley Gore got her start mining the girl-group sound of the ’60s, scoring a huge hit at age 17 with 1963’s “It’s My Party,” which authoritatively established Gore’s right to cry if she wants to. Her sharp, sweet, naa-naa voice found its way onto other touchstones, like “You Don’t Own Me,” “That’s The Way Boys Are,” and “Maybe I Know.” She came out publicly as a lesbian in 2005, but hadn't made it much of a secret previously, writing a song for a young lesbian singer based on herself in Allison Anders' 1996 film Grace Of My Heart, and hosting PBS' series on gay issues, In The Life. Gore plays here behind 2005’s smoky jazz album Ever Since, her first collection of new recordings since the ’70s.
