"Mad" New Year's Eve Celebration at Hotel Minneapolis

The New Standards' approach to covering pop tunes with jazz instrumentation isn't as wacked-out as that of fellow Minnesotans The Bad Plus, but in a way it does a lot more justice to the songs themselves. Setting "London Calling" and "Dark End Of The Street"—the band has a pretty cool, broad idea of what the last 50 years' "standards" are—amid the interplay of piano, bass, and vibraphone is risky, but singer-pianist Chan Poling and band adapt dynamically and affectionately from song to song, consistently setting the right moods and then stretching out boldly. The group's New Year's bash has a Mad Men theme, so dress in your '60s best and prepare to drink, dance, and possibly cheat on your spouse.
