The Swedish take their metal deathly seriously, and while Marduk’s bid to be “the most blasphemous band in the world” might seem quaint next to church-burning Norwegian groups like Mayhem, it remains one of the most brutal bands in the world. Metal’s growing tendency toward creeping atmospherics colors recent Marduk albums, and nearly every song on the recent Wormwood alternates between funereal dirges and frenzied blast-beats. Still, it’s nowhere near as psych-influenced as Chicago’s Nachtmystium—one of the American black-metal scene’s leading (darkest) lights—which posits what Meddle-era Pink Floyd might’ve sounded like with corpse paint and homespun production values, with all manner of weird (and frequently beautiful) acoustic-guitar passages, EBow moans, and synthesizer burbles seeping into its dark, atmospheric stew.
