Mason Jennings and The Pines at First Avenue

Mason Jennings' mild-mannered appeal keeps him from blending in with the more hokey, polished singer-songwriters of his generation. If anything, he can have it both ways, taking advantage of the freedom of being under the radar and the popularity of catchy songs written in plain English. 2009's Blood Of Man finds him enjoying his in-between status as much as ever: He played all the instruments himself, giving a slightly rough, rocking feel to a likable set of tunes. "The Field" even aims for the chilly ache of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, tackling dark subject matter with patience and maturity. At this First Avenue show, Jennings' second in a month, he may have a new song or two to play, since he writes in a recent blog entry that he's "been humming a new one in my head all week."
