Mates Of State and Free Energy at 400 Bar

Bands often don't survive the major life changes of their members, but indie-pop duo Mates Of State progressed over the past dozen years from college friends to a married couple to parents, while shifting its home base from Kansas to San Francisco to Connecticut. Mates Of State's last proper album, 2008's Re-Arrange Us, expanded the band's sound, moving beyond the organ-and-drums simplicity of early records and into something more layered and nuanced. Unfortunately, the band has followed it up with a new "covers mix-tape" called Crushes that reworks Death Cab For Cutie, Belle & Sebastien, Daniel Johnston, and more. Like all covers albums, it's patently inessential, but it's pleasant enough. Expect lots of those songs on this tour, which also features Philly power-pop band Free Energy.
