Philadelphia’s Mewithoutyou often comes off like a vociferous street preacher in the world of Christian hardcore—mostly due to lead ranter Aaron Weiss’ sing-speak-yell vocals and heavily thematic lyrics. The band has only gotten more spiritual over time, and latter efforts have produced an increasingly transcendent and rock-oriented sound. Last year’s mouthful It’s All Crazy! It’s All False! It’s All A Dream! It’s Alright! settled into a far folkier, mellow vibe built around acoustic guitar and strings—all the better to explore the pious musings of Sufi mystic Bawa Muhaiyaddeen. It'll make an odd pairing here with the gothic Americana of Murder By Death—the band's rustic acoustics and hushed, spooky sound couldn't differ more from the headliner.
