The Minus 5, The Baseball Project, and The Steve Wynn IV at Turf Club
The Minus 5 is sort of a latter-day version of revolving-door alt-rock supergroup The Golden Palominos, but with the sharp songwriting of Young Fresh Fellows’ Scott McCaughey at its center. The group’s membership most notably includes R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, and has also pulled in John Wesley Harding, Posies’ Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer, and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. (The group’s terrific 2003 album is even titled Down With Wilco in solidarity with Tweedy.) For the excellent, alt-country-tinged Killingsworth, McCaughey's joined by Buck and Decemberists drummer John Moen. Buck and McCaughey are also pulling triple-duty with the opening acts on this tour, joining Dream Syndicate leader Steve Wynn and Zuzu's Petals drummer Linda Pitmon for The Baseball Project, which offers up—truth in advertising—an entire set of songs written about pro baseball. The quartet also plays as The Steve Wynn IV for a set of Wynn-penned tunes including material from his recent Crossing Dragon Bridge.
