Natalie MacMaster at Cedar Cultural Center

Natalie MacMaster’s approach to Celtic-inspired fiddle work and step-dancing plays out as unorthodox, yet safely agreeable, yet kind of aggressive. (She once said that audiences “need to be hit with it in the face.”) The lively style lends itself to shows more grandiose and flagrant than expected from folk-influenced music. Her 2007 concert DVD, Live In Cape Breton, catches MacMaster and band revving it up onstage under big, multicolored lights, with such guests as Béla Fleck. Her last studio album, 2006’s Yours Truly, spans from traditional Irish songs to “Farewell To Peter,” a tribute to late news anchor and fellow Canadian Peter Jennings.
