The New Rebelution, DJ Blaze One, St. Paul Slim, Goulash, Wide Eyes, and Crunchy Kids at Cabooze
In 2004, there was a palpable sense of excitement around A Tiger Dancing, the third LP by local hip-hop stalwarts Heiruspecs. That album sorta sputtered out, resigning the group to forever-local status. Its influence is still alive though, as evidenced by newish live hip-hoppers Crunchy Kids. Flowed-out and jazzy, the four-piece act released its eponymous debut this past summer. The album comes off like a new-millennium spit shine of what A Tiger Dancing attempted seven years ago. Jammy instrumental arrangements are spruced up with smart sampling and electronica garnishes. MC Slim Chance proves capable, ably rhyming on subjects ranging from slice-of-life monotony to everyman philosophy.
