Pernice Brothers, Mary Mack, and Kate Boothman at 400 Bar
Literary rock is a pretty meaningless genre tag as it's generally used when referring to bands like The Decemberists, but it applies perfectly to singer-songwriter Joe Pernice. He's penned plenty of sunny hooks and Big Star-like harmonies with indie-rock/chamber-pop outfit the Pernice Brothers, but has recently emerged with his debut novel, It Feels So Good When I Stop. It vaguely recalls High Fidelity by chronicling a 25-year-old slacker musician's escape from adulthood by leaving his wife to get his shit together while name-dropping choice indie-rock touchstones like Sebadoh's "Soul And Fire," plus a handful of fictional songs. Pernice took things a step further by releasing a companion soundtrack to the book, with excerpts from the novel weaving into covers of the songs he wrote about.
