Pieta Brown and Jason Shannon at Cedar Cultural Center
Pieta Brown, the daughter of Iowa folk legend Greg Brown, takes a similarly rootsy approach to her music, though her voice is reminiscent of a sultrier Sheryl Crow rather than her dad’s deep growl. 2007’s Remember The Sun, the best work of her career so far, moved her firmly from promising songwriter to a solid creator of heartland folk-rock. More recently, she contributed guest vocals on Calexico’s Carried To Dust, and released two seven-song EPs: 2008's Flight Time, and the new Shimmer, which gets its official CD-release show here. Released on Minneapolis label Red House Records (which was founded by the elder Brown), Shimmer teams Brown with superstar producer Don Was, who keeps the focus firmly on her voice and guitar, recording all the songs live in a single take.
