Pink Mountaintops and Magic Castles at Turf Club

Where Black Mountain gives Stephen McBean an outlet for his psychedelic-rock leanings, the similarly named Pink Mountaintops seemingly gives him free reign to flex his experimental-music muscles. It isn’t too out there, as PM takes root in McBean’s apparent obsession with mountains: The new Outside Love is majestic, sweeping, and grand. Mandolins and fuzzed-out bass joyfully commingle with sing-along vocals on “Holiday,” while even more breathing room is afforded on the breathtakingly beautiful “While We Were Dreaming” and the stuttering shanty of “Come Down.” Somehow the band has managed to capture the feel of fireflies flitting around in the summer air and convert it into songs.
