Poverty Hash at Turf Club
Splitting the difference between traditional blues and Jon Spencer’s howling interpretation’s of the genre, Connecticut’s Poverty Hash encircles its self-proclaimed “carnival” racket with trusty tools of the trade like lap steel and thunderous upright bass. Joe Roberto’s robust voice easily downshifts to gospel-tinged wailing on “Drink The Ocean” and back up to sinister screams on “Blood Stained Hands,” while the rhythm section secures the low end. The group’s debut, Ma Hall’s Toot-N-Come Inn, is due in March on Minneapolis’ Halfdoor Records.
