The Pretenders and Cat Power at First AvenueFirst Avenue 701 1st Ave. N., Twin Cities, MN
Perhaps the best way to consider this bill is in terms of the three acts’ different vocal stylings. Juliette Lewis—actress, ex-fiancée of Brad Pitt, and former leader of Juliette And The Licks—prefers to scream. Cat Power, whose presence here should appeal to the more indie-minded concertgoers, opts for a hoarse breathiness that’s often quite beautiful. The Pretenders, meanwhile, fall somewhere in the middle, with singer Chrissie Hynde’s assertive growl anchoring her seminal band’s deep discography. The band released a new album last year titled Break Up The Concrete, but there should be plenty of time for the classics here as well. (Note: After this show was moved to First Avenue from the Orpheum, Juliette Lewis is now playing after The Pretenders in the adjacent 7th Street Entry, instead of performing as an opener. That show is free to Pretenders ticketholders.)
