Reel Big Fish and The English Beat at Minnesota Zoo

Although Reel Big Fish has attempted to alter its sound over the years, the band’s marriage of horn-fueled ska and goofy lyrics remains pretty much the same as it was more than a decade ago. The group’s 2007 release, Monkeys For Nothin’ And The Chimps For Free, freely embraced what made Reel Big Fish popular to begin with—sugary, sarcastic ska—while this year’s Fame, Fortune, And Fornication sticks to skanked-up takes on well-worn covers. The English Beat started as part of the Two-Tone scene that gripped England in the late ’70s. While never as overtly socially conscious as fellow ska-sters like The Specials, the band did pen a string of terrific songs: “Mirror In The Bathroom,” “Twist And Crawl,” and so on.
