Reverend Horton Heat, Larry And His Flask, and Goddamn Gallows at First Avenue
Jim Heath, a.k.a. the Reverend Horton Heat, has made a career out of nostalgia: As the pinnacle of the early-’90s rockabilly revival, the Rev has spastically twitched out a rollicking, jittery twang that brought a party-punk swagger back to a scene drenched by moody downer grunge. In the following decade, he got more mainstream-friendly while expanding his sound, which wasn’t always a good thing; he hit a low point on the bland scale with a 2005 Christmas album, but things picked up with 2009’s Laughin’ And Cryin’ With The Reverend Horton Heat. The Reverend’s frenzied live show is hard to match.
