Romi Mayes and Roger Johnson And The Arrow Flynns at Lee's Liquor Lounge
Believe it or not, there are country artists who don't self-consciously lunge in one direction or another—be it edgy traditionalism or alt-country quirkiness or pop-country spit-shine—yet don't end up slouching in the ditches of blandness, either. Winnipeg's Romi Mayes pens both her honky-tonk stompers and shady ballads with plainspoken phrasing and to-the-point tunes. On her most recent album, Achin In Your Bones, Mayes finds a kindred spirit in her producing partner, Texan songwriter Gurf Morlix, with arrangements that err on the side of bleak and help the unassuming Mayes stick out a bit more. This doesn't make her the most surprising country songwriter out there, but she seems to thrive on a simple-equals-sturdy formula.
