Slayer, Megadeth, and Testament at Roy Wilkins Auditorium
Slayer remains one of speed-metal’s most vital and revered practitioners, practically inventing the double-kick-drum assault nearly 20 years ago. It’s one of the few popular metal acts to have stuck to its guns artistically, and its stubborn refusal to compromise is laudable. Last year’s World Painted Blood is orthodox Slayer: It sounds like hell built on a few dozen Marshall stacks. Co-headliner Megadeth is rooted in its own metal legend: Within months of getting tossed out of Metallica, vocalist-guitarist Dave Mustaine started up his own rival thrash metal group as a big “fuck you” to his former bandmates. Fueled by revenge and speedballs, Megadeth would go on to sell 25 million records over the next two decades.
