Slow Southern Steel, Zoroaster, and Hail! Hornet at Turf Club

Heavy as the celestial bodies that frequently make their way into the band’s lyrics, Zoroaster plays psychedelic doom metal with a bent toward the mythological. A worthy contender for the title of “Atlanta’s loudest band” (though it would obviously have to fight Mastodon for that crown), the trio has spent most of its career trudging through heavy, Big Muff-laden riffage—although it picks up the pace on “Black Hole,” the apocalyptic track from 2010’s Matador. With a clearer chug and more harrowing growls from vocalists Will Fiore and Brent Anderson, “Black Hole” burrows deep into a space-opera hell, aided by a Pink Floyd-esque sax break. The Southern rockers will be paired with a screening of Slow Southern Steel, an underground rock doc that follows the tight community of Southern sludgestars. Directed by CT of Rwake and David Lipke, the doom- and metal-focused feature depicts live performances and interviews that only directors immersed in the Southern death metal community could capture.
