Spice World at Uptown Theatre
Once upon a time in the mid-’90s, the Spice Girls were on top on the world. Their first record, Spice, went platinum in more than a dozen countries; the follow-up did just as well. The pop quintet’s feminism-lite peaked in 1997 with the release of Spice World, a fictional Hard Day’s Night-style tale of the girls’ trip to the top. Full of dream sequences and hard-to-understand cockney accents, the 90-minute movie follows the ladies as they attempt to balance a stressful work life with their best friend Nicola’s pregnancy. Meat Loaf, Roger Moore, and Mark McKinney (Kids In The Hall) also star, and a handful of cameos—Elton John and Elvis Costello among them—give the flimsy film a firm place in pop-culture history.
