Musicians with gimmicks often live in the shadow of whatever unusual tweak they’ve made to their instruments, lineup, or performance style. For That 1 Guy, a.k.a. California’s one-man band of Mike Silverman, it’s his 7-foot-tall homemade instrument called The Magic Pipe. It yields big, booming slap-bass rhythms and bowed melody lines, but it’s only half of Silverman’s story. Songs like the funky “Buttmachine” (which Ryan Seacrest memorably praised on E! Entertainment News) and head-scratching “It’s Raining Meat” happily indulge audiences’ “this guy is so weird” needs, but listen longer and catchy, complex melodies and toe-tapping rhythms become more prominent. There’s a reason heavyweights like Tom Waits have tapped him to sit in on recording sessions.
