These United States, Or, The Whale, and Total Babe at 7th Street Entry
Bubbly yet moody, D.C.’s These United States employ lackadaisical electronics and lead-knuckled strums on Crimes, their 2008 sophomore full-length. Their third album, Everything Touches Everything, doesn't make them any easier to pin down: They're a little bit rock, a little bit psychedelic, and while they can be deadly serious, their sound is often playful. There’s a hint of early Beck to the band’s hazy drift, not to mention its mumbled, trembling vocals and scattershot arrangements—including diffidently tickled keyboards and asthmatic horns. It’s a lazy kind of genius for sure, but it’s clear that These United States have only started an artistic arc that just might take them to bigger places.
