Tim O'Reagan and Karen Grotberg at 318 Cafe
Tim O’Reagan wasn’t a frontman until recently; he always let Todd Newman take the lead in early-’90s group The Leatherwoods and later backed up leader Gary Louris as drummer and co-vocalist for The Jayhawks. His own facility for songwriting began to show toward the end of the alt-country group’s run with two tunes on the 2003 disc Rainy Day Music, including the standout “Don’t Let The World Get In Your Way.” He took center stage on 2006's self-titled solo debut with a set of songs that expanded on the Hawks’ rootsy base to include cheerful, poppy folk, and psychedelia. In 2009, he returned to the Jayhawks nest for a few shows that marked the band's official, if probably only occasional, reunion. He performs here with another solo Jayhawk, keyboardist Karen Grotberg.
