The Trashmen + The Neanderthals, The 99ers at Turf Club

Even though Minneapolis is as far from an ocean as you can get in North America, it still deserves a mention in any history of '60s surf rock, thanks to The Trashmen and their monster 1964 hit "Surfin' Bird." Combining two earlier tunes by The Rivingtons, "Bird" stands above its source material, and most other surf songs of the era, thanks to its manic energy and sheer eccentric charm. Rock's gradual loss of innocence left The Trashmen behind, and they broke up in the late '60s, but a reunited quartet (sans original drummer and vocalist Steve Wahrer, who died in 1989) is papa-oom-mow-mowing again. They play here with The Neanderthals, the garage-rock side project of Eddie Angel of Los Straitjackets. Also opening is the amazingly prolific local surf combo The 99ers, who've just released their second 18-song album, And Then There Was Surf, and have 35 more songs prepped for their next one.
