Upstate, Pine Deluxe, and Castle Danger at Lee's Liquor Lounge
Minneapolis-bred alt-country/rock band Upstate is a quintessentially Midwestern outfit. The band has a full sound, with twangy Americana guitar and charming folky two-part harmonies. Upstate’s digital debut, The Breeze And Brandy, has a lot of this, including slide-y guitar solos, uplifting church-organ backdrops, and feel-good vocals. It’s sunny music—Americana from the middle states wrapped up into a bar band with a pension for The Allman Brothers and an understanding of what puts the “classic” in classic rock. Upstate’s at its best leaning on the country side of things—and one’s left wanting a bit more of that on The Breeze And Brandy. But with nothing but a five-song EP under the band’s belt thus far, we’re just splitting hairs.
