Vertical Horizon and Howard Jennings at Fine Line Music Cafe
If Vertical Horizon didn’t exist, rock critics would have invented it as shorthand to describe how shitty mainstream pop-rock was at the turn of the century. As it is, the band is remembered for hits like “Everything You Want” and “You’re A God” (from 1999’s Everything You Want) that made Matchbox Twenty look edgy by comparison. Vertical Horizon’s limited shelf life was already apparent by the time of its ill-fated follow-up, Go, which sank without a trace in a sea of White Stripes and Strokes in 2003. Now Vertical Horizon is back with Burning The Days, its first album in six years. Are years ending in “9” good luck for these faded alt-rockers? Let’s hope not.
