Watcha Clan and Huun Huur Tu at Cedar Cultural Center
French outfit Watcha Clan piles on programmed house beats, urgent female vocals, stand-up bass, synth melodies, and even the occasional squawking guitar solo. (That's not counting other instrumentalists and collaborators who've popped in on the band's records and live sets.) The Clan approaches this potentially cluttered M.O. with a focus, though, always winding itself up to the pitch of an international party-siren. That energy, along with Sista K and Soupa Jou's multi-lingual vocals, helps the group patch together sounds from across the Mediterranean and Middle East under a loud electronic canopy. The band recently followed 2008's Diaspora Hi-Fi: A Mediterranean Caravan with Diaspora Remixed, letting internationally minded DJs from New York to Greece mix up the sound still further.
