The Whigs, The Features, and The Dead Trees at Triple Rock Social Club
Athens, Ga.’s The Whigs charge wildly and eagerly into tight, noisy pop hooks. Their 2008 album, Mission Control, nods at the likes of The Strokes, The Raspberries, Foo Fighters, and The Replacements—cockiness very much included. The Whigs’ best stuff draws heavily on bombastic guitar and drum work, while retaining a mind for wry, slightly clever songwriting. A new album, In The Dark, is due out early next year, so expect some new material here—the title track is available on their website. Openers The Features debuted in 1997 as a Tennessee new-wave band before morphing into an Elephant 6-influenced pop band, and then, finally into a rollicking art-rock outfit. Still, their songs never ring false—2009’s Some Kind Of Salvation radiates pure fun.
