Wiz Khalifa, U-God, and Jasmine Solano at Varsity Theater
Street rap could always use help recovering a sense of excitement, and whether or not Wiz Khalifa has provided that, the Pittsburg MC's sheer skill and versatility certainly pumps some fresh blood into it. He put out his first full-length, 2006's Show And Prove, at age 19, and his first single for Warner Bros., "Young'n On His Grind," followed in 2007. He soon parted ways with Warner, however, sticking with Pittsburgh's Rostrum Records for last year's Deal Or No Deal. Tracks like Deal's "Goodbye" prove he's comfortable—actually at his best—stretching beyond the smooth, funky-chill raps of "Grind" and his tattoo anthem "Ink My Whole Body." The flexibility rubs off either way, and that's the main thing going for him right now.
