Yo La Tengo and Cheap Time at First Avenue
According to Ralph Waldo Emerson and every freshman-year term paper from the past century, “a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” That might be the case, but what about awesome consistency? Chipotle is always delicious, for instance, in large part because it’s so consistent. You might eat at Chipotle every day, for years, and never get sick of it. The same could be said for Yo La Tengo: Few bands boast a wheat/chaff ratio as enviable as the longstanding Hoboken, N.J. trio, and its latest full-length, Popular Songs, doesn’t disappoint: Harmonies soar, horns and organs punch, and nine-minute jams get knotty before they’re deftly untangled.
