Didn't the sequels prove you cannot revisit this movie ever! Glory (if that's the word) in the synthetic badassery of the original and leave off all second-raters.

Other than the giant absurdity of a crumbling Gothic castle on Haiti, this is a really good movie, and maybe the most effective use of silent movie imagery in a sound film.
The trouble with your argument is most obviously that you are applying a possible motivation in real life to the specific situation that occurred with two fictional characters.
